Taushiri

Taushiri means 'House of the Monkey' in Mayab-Lenka. The Mayab-Lenkas are indigenous to El Salvador and monkeys were typically associated with the scribes - men and women who were highly trained artists, writers and storytellers--I'm a Salvadoran artist based in San Francisco, CA, here to share my work on this blog. Let’s talk about ancient Maya tamales. Fun fact: They had tamales before tortillas, the latter being a recent addition in their cuisine arriving in the Maya region in the Postclassic period, in some cases even in the Colonial period. The tamal on the other hand goes far back into the Preclassic period. The murals of San Bartolo (100 BC) depict them.
